Q&A with gold medalist David Boudia

Q&A with gold medalist David Boudia

David Boudia shares the new sport he's crazy about, how having a daughter impacted his training and his favorite place in the world.

What is your earliest memory of watching the Olympics? Did you imagine yourself being in that position someday?

The 1996 Olympics: I watched the Opening Ceremony and said that was what I wanted to do when I grew up!

What is your earliest memory of diving and what was it that propelled you to dedicate your life to it?

The 1996 Olympics. I remember watching everything - especially gymnastics and track - but didn't find diving until 2000. I loved the flipping and twist of diving.

Have you become close friends with any competitors from other countries?

Very close with the Chinese divers, and the rest of the countries for that matter... Diving is a friendly sport because I think we all recognize the danger and difficulty of the sport.

Do you have any pre-competition rituals?

I always listen to the same song and prayer before every event.

How do you like to unwind after a competition?

With a massage treatment and being with my wife and daughter! I want to feel normal!

When you have time off, what would constitute a perfect day for you?

Being with family and friends, having a cook-out or bonfire, playing board games or yard games and talking

How has having a daughter changed the way you train?

Having a daughter after the 2012 Olympics has made training so much different because once my first job (diving) ends, my other job (being a dad and husbands) begins. It is non-stop work without much rest but totally worth it and has made this journey to 2016 so much better - but at the same time harder.

Do you cook most of your food and if so, what are some of your signature recipes? What meals do you like to cook most when entertaining?

My wife does a lot of the cooking, so I can spend time with my daughter because I am gone most of the day... but love to help her cook! I usually cook the proteins on the grill, stove or oven.

If you are to indulge, what's your go-to meal/snack?

Chips and salsa, cheesy anything and anything baked!

Do you have a personal motto?

"Keep perspective"

Do you collect anything?

Coffee mugs from everywhere I visit

Can you admit what your worst habit is?

Picking my nose...

What is your music of choice while training?  Do you have a favorite go-to song/songs that motivate you?

Christian hip hop/ rap, Latino and jazz

What is the last concert you attended?

Can't remember (Maybe Blake Shelton?)

If you were not an athlete, what would you like to be doing?

I love being active, so if I weren't diving, I would still be involved with something active. My family and I are very involved in our local church and helping college students.

Do you like to travel?  What has been the most moving/special place you have traveled to and why?

Polignano a Mare, Italy is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to. But because I am gone so much for diving and work, I would rather not travel. I love being home!

What are some of your hobbies outside of training?

I love cooking, baking and trying new meals with my wife. We volunteer and love serving my local church and community. Boating, as we take five or more family lake trips to Dale Hollow Lake and go on our house boat and wake boards. I'm a rookie gardener: my first year failed and everything died!

Golf is making its return to the Olympics in Rio. Do you play or have a favorite golfer?

I wish I could play golf, but I am awful! I love Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.

Do you play any other sports?

There are not many I do not like playing! Spikeball is our new craze right now.
