Dorman/Hixon, Parratto/Cozad qualify for first Olympic diving team

The synchro pairs of Sam Dorman/ Michael Hixon and Amy Cozad/ Jessica Parratto qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics at Trials on Wednesday.

The pair of Sam Dorman and Michael Hixon qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics by winning the men’s 3m springboard competition at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials in Indianapolis on Wednesday. Women's synchronized 10m platform pair Amy Cozad and Jessica Parratto qualified for each of their first Games, too.

It’ll be the first Olympic appearance for both Dorman and Hixon, who have never competed together domestically or internationally prior to Trials, whereas Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais earned bronze medals together at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the event. Ipsen and Dumais were second to Dorman and Hixon, though only the top pair punches a ticket to Rio in this event at Trials. Dumais, who is aiming to become the first U.S. male Olympian to make five Games appearances, has another chance to qualify for Rio in the individual springboard.

Dorman and Hixon finished the competition in first place with a cumulative score of 1308.36 points to Ipsen and Dumais' 1260.39. Ipsen and Dumais actually out-scored Dorman and Hixon in the final by 8.55 points, but it was not enough to make up their 56.52 point deficit, accumulated through the preliminary and semifinal rounds.
Cozad and Parratto scored 935.76 ponts to secure their berth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, 89.34 points over their nearest competitors Murphy Bromberg and Delaney Schnell. Parratto, Cozad and Bromberg will be rivals for two Olympic berths in the women's individual platform competition; that final will be contested Saturday.
Competition continues Thursday with the men’s synchronized 10m final, where David Boudia and Steele Johnson lead the field of three other pairs by a margin of 124.98 points after Sunday’s semifinal.
